Our school, Istituto Tecnico Industriale Statale “Galileo Galilei”, was created in 1887 as an arts and crafts school with the aim to help young people get a qualified job; today, one of the largest schools in our area, it is a technical-scientific secondary school offering six courses of study: chemistry, biotechnologies, mechanics, informatics, electrotechnologies and electronics.
In the past and still nowadays motivated teachers and staff have tried to fill educational gaps promoting activities and projects, even rearranging and updating syllabus and courses to new social requirements: Environment, Robotics and Energy are some of the newly introduced departments.
Most of the students come from the local town or the surrounding area, although recently our school has received several students from Eastern Europe, China, Northern Africa and Southern America. Special projects in the school try to grant them a successful integration.
Most of the students are from middle and working class: they come to our school looking for an education that may easily get them a job; a few of them continue their studies at university.
Our school organization includes also evening classes for adult/working students to get a qualified certification of secondary education.
Students also attend working stages organized by the school every summer, language stages; and a large number of extracurricular educational activities; they are also offered the opportunity to get international qualifications such as ECDL and Trinity College Language Certification.
The participation in this project will give our students the opportunity to broaden their minds, face new experiences, renovate motivation, learn to cooperate and become gradually aware of their potential role in a wider, international environment.
Moreover this project will be a chance to develop new skills and competences not only in our students, but also in the teachers who will follow and support the project.
Other local bodies are expected to join in: Natural History of the Mediterranean Sea Museum, departments for Environment, Education and Social Progress in our municipality, the Society for Environmental Services (ASA), the Port Authority, The Chamber of Commerce, the Consorzio Intrauniversitario per il Centro di Biologia Marina, the Acquarium D.Cestoni, the Consorzio Nautico dei Fossi Livornesi, the Comitee for PALIO MARINARO, the local newspaper “Il Tirreno”and TV broadcaster “Tele Granducato”.
